Compliance Corner: Navigating the Regulatory Realm

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has made a significant stride towards enhancing air quality and public health with the revision of the annual Particulate Matter (PM2.5) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS).

Announced on February 7, 2024, and officially published in the Federal Register on March 6, 2024, this pivotal change marks a rigorous adjustment in the battle against air pollution. Set to take effect on May 6, 2024, the new standards will see the annual PM2.5 levels tighten from 12 µg/m^3 to 9 µg/m^3, a reduction of 25%. This adjustment underscores a stringent approach towards mitigating particulate pollution and emphasizes the EPA's commitment to safeguarding environmental health and safety.

This update necessitates a recalibration of strategies and methodologies aimed at achieving and maintaining compliance with these more stringent air quality standards. The forthcoming proposal of an updated annual PM2.5 Significant Impact Level (SIL) by the EPA, expected to be released on or before the new NAAQS effective date, further highlights the importance of staying abreast of regulatory changes and their implications on environmental planning, project impact assessments, and pollution control technologies.

How Extratropical Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions Can Contribute to the Variability of Jet Streams in the Northern Hemisphere

April 1, 2024 - The interaction between the oceans and the atmosphere plays a vital role in shaping the Earth’s climate. Changing sea surface temperatures can heat or cool the atmosphere, and changes in the atmosphere can do the same to the ocean surface. This exchange in energy is known as “ocean-atmosphere coupling.”
