Monthly Modeling Tip

CALPUFF Model Versions

TRC released a new version of the CALPUFF modeling system on the 29th of June; the new release has introduced some changes to the naming of the various versions. To avoid confusion, we will clarify the version naming below.

Previous Versions of the CALPUFF Modeling System

Prior to the June 29th release, there were three active versions of the CALPUFF modeling system:

Version Description
US EPA Approved (Version 5) This version was the US EPA approved version of CALPUFF for regulatory use
VISTAS Version This version was designed for use in VISTAS applications (Visibility Improvement State and Tribe Association of the South East)
Version 6 This version contained the latest model enhancements and updates from TRC

Current Versions of the CALPUFF Modeling System

The CALPUFF Version released on June 29th is referred to as the US EPA Approved Version 5.8. This version is based on the VISTAS series of models.

The June 29th, 2007 release introduced the following changes:

  • The old US EPA Approved Version 5 is no longer current
  • The VISTAS Version was replaced by the new US EPA Approved Version 5.8

There are now only two current versions of the CALPUFF modeling system:

Version Description
US EPA Approved (Version 5.8) This version is the US EPA approved version of CALPUFF for regulatory use
Version 6 This version contained the latest model enhancements and updates from TRC

Obtaining the Models

The current versions of the CALPUFF modeling system can be downloaded from the TRC website at https://www.src.com/calpuff/calpuff1.htm

CALPUFF View supports both Version 6 and the US EPA Approved Version 5.8, as well as the old US EPA Approved Version 5.

Remember: We are currently accepting submissions for the Monthly Modeling Tip which appears in our newsletters.  If you have a modeling tip that may benefit a variety of people, please send it to us at support@weblakes.com. Your name and the name of your organization will appear below the tip providing you with greater exposure.

August 9, 2007 - NEW ORLEANS -- The U.S. Department of Energy will have its plan for cutting energy use ready by next year, Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman said Wednesday.

To Trade or not to Trade: Climate Change in the Marketplace
VANCOUVER - August 8, 2007 - Most policy makers and business leaders now recognize the need for action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate climate change. The challenge, however, is in implementing a system which results in real emissions reductions, while still allowing for economic growth and private sector innovation. Increasingly the debate revolves around whether a ‘cap and trade’ emissions trading regime or a carbon tax is the best mechanism to achieve real reductions in carbon emissions while maintaining economic growth. An eclectic group of advocates are lining up on each side of the debate with no clear winner in sight.

Bush Climate Meeting Draws Doubts about Action
WASHINGTON - August 8, 2007 - A U.S. summit in September on climate change, one of at least four international meetings set for this year, is already raising doubts about any action being taken before President Bush leaves office.

Choose Your Weapon: Selecting the appropriate air pollution control system for your operation
August 1, 2007 Since the early 1970s, air pollution control regulations have required many businesses to install emission control systems to destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and/or hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), or face fines. While general guidelines regarding the destruction of air pollutants in process exhaust air streams are somewhat consistent within each industry, a company’s individual requirements and desires can greatly vary.
