Monthly Modeling Tip
|
Utilizing Dual-Processors for AERMOD
Runs
|
The US EPA AERMOD model is not currently designed to take
advantage of dual-processors, meaning that having dual-processors
will not reduce run times. Dual-processors may, however,
reduce the impact of an AERMOD run on other tasks being performed
at the same time.
Using Batcher from Lakes Environmental
When you have more than one AERMOD project to run, it is
possible to take advantage of dual-processors using Batcher.
Batcher
is a utility that is part of the ISC-AERMOD View package.
It allows you to run your project outside the ISC-AERMOD
View interface and is designed
to let you easily perform multiple modeling runs. By opening
two instances of Batcher, it is possible to run two projects
at one time, one on each processor. This will result in reduced
run times compared to running both projects in one instance
of Batcher, or running through the ISC-AERMOD View interface.
You should ensure that your projects are stored in different
directories, so that there is no conflict with temporary
files created when AERMOD is run.

Iraq's Marshes Return
Duke University's Curtis J. Richardson,
a wetlands expert, was part of the first scientific
team to visit the Iraqi Mesopotamian marshes after
Saddam Hussein's fall in 2003. Lying between the Tigris
and Euphrates rivers, the marshes - once nearly twice
the size of the Everglades - were the main stopover
on the Siberia-Africa bird migration route, and a crucial
filter that cleansed the rivers as they flowed into
the Persian Gulf.
