Worldwide Terrain Elevation Data - SRTM

Shuttle Radar Topography Mission

A good source of terrain elevation data for the CALPUFF model is the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data.

The SRTM data was collected using a specially modified radar system that flew onboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour during a mission in 2000. The SRTM terrain data is available in the following resolutions:

SRTM3 (~90m) - Global Coverage (detailed below)
SRTM30 (~900m) - Global Coverage (similar to GTOPO30)
SRTM1 (~30m) - USA Coverage

The above SRTM terrain data can be downloaded from Lakes Environmental website. The links are connected directly to the NASA site (courtesy of NASA/NGA/USGS).

https://www.weblakes.com/lakesdem.html

SRTM3 - Version 2 - Global Coverage (~90m)

The SRTM3 data covers most of the Earth, from 56 °S to 60 °N, and has a resolution of 3 arc-seconds or approximately 90 meters. The data within the covered region is almost entirely complete, but may be missing in areas, such as summits over 7000m.

Details of the SRTM3 Terrain Data Format
Projection Geographic
Datum WGS84/EGM96
Elevation Units Meters
Resolution 3 arc seconds (~90m)
Region Covered 56 °S to 60 °N
File Size 1x1 degree

The SRTM3 terrain data is available in 1 x 1 degree tiles. Each SRTM3 file is named according to its location. For example, the file N32E034.hgt covers the range of 32°-33° North and 34°-35° East.

Note: CALPUFF View Version 2.2 supports the SRTM3, SRTM30, and SRTM1 terrain data formats. Additionally, the next version of ISC-AERMOD View will include an enhancement which will automatically process SRTM terrain elevation data so that it can be processed by AERMAP.

Remember: We are currently accepting submissions for the Monthly Modeling Tip which appears in our newsletters.  If you have a modeling tip that may benefit a variety of people, please send it to us at support@weblakes.com. Your name and the name of your organization will appear below the tip providing you with greater exposure.
