Monthly Modeling Tip

Creating Base Maps in Google Earth
|
Base maps are a valuable resource when conducting air dispersion modeling.
Although optional, the use of a base map can drastically reduce errors as
well as the time required for model setup.
When base maps are not available, Google Earth is an excellent tool for
accessing base maps anywhere in the world.
For ISC-AERMOD View and other Lakes Environmental Software
packages, base maps from Google Earth can be imported
into the software by following the steps below:
Step 1. Find the desired location in Google
Earth, and zoom in or out to show the desired region.
Step 2. Mark two points on the map using the Placemark tool ;
they will be used as reference points. These points should be
diagonally opposite and far apart.
Step 3. Note the location of the reference points by
zooming in on the points, placing the cursor over them and
reading the coordinates
off the bottom-left of the screen. By default, Google Earth
will display the coordinates in lat/long, but this can
be changed to UTM
under the 3D View Tab by selecting Tools | Options | from the menu.
Step 4. Go to File | Save | Save Image and save the image in JPEG format to the
desired location.
Step 5. In ISC-AERMOD View, select Import | Base Maps | JPEG
Step 6. Graphically specify the two reference points
and give their coordinates. Click OK.
Google Earth
|
ISC-AERMOD View
|
Note that Google Earth uses the WGS84 datum. If your project is in a different
datum, you will need to convert the coordinates of your reference points using
the Coordinate Converter utility. This utility can be accessed from the Tools
menu in ISC-AERMOD View.
Google Earth can be downloaded from https://earth.google.com
