US EPA Announces Updates to AERMOD Modeling System
On April 24, 2018, the US EPA announced revisions to the AERMOD air dispersion model and its components AERMET, the meteorological data preprocessor, and AERMAP, the terrain data preprocessor. The updated model executables have been published on the SCRAM website.
A full list of changes for each model can be found on the AERMOD & AERMET web pages. Changes include:
Lakes Environmental hosted an informational webinar on April 30th to discuss the enhancements and bug fixes applied to each of the models. A recording of the presentation is available here. |
Our team is hard at work implementing updates to AERMOD View, AERMET View, the AERMOD parallel version (AERMOD MPI), and the AERMAP parallel version (AERMAP MPI) to address the changes incorporated into Model Versions 18081. Be on the lookout for an email from Lakes Environmental announcing the new AERMOD View Version 9.6 release upon its availability.
If your copy of AERMOD View is no longer in maintenance, please contact our sales team at sales@webLakes.com for pricing to update your software and be eligible for this new and very important release.

Modeling Tip
Source Contributions in CALPUFF
When analyzing air quality impacts from pollution sources, it may be important to understand which sources or groups of sources are contributing the most to the cumulative impact of all sources. Some air dispersion models have simple routines for grouping sources or analyzing individual source contributions, but it can be a challenge in some systems.
The CALPUFF air dispersion modeling system has a utility called CALSUM which is useful for analyzing cumulative impacts from multiple model runs. This allows modelers the flexibility to analyze contribution from one or more sources separately and still see the overall effects on air quality.
Using CALPUFF View™, modelers have multiple tools at their disposal to carry out this type of analysis.
- Start by setting up your project in CALPUFF View. Include all sources of interest.
- Determine how many different sources (or groups of sources) you have from which you want to analyze contribution. For each contribution group of interest, create a project copy.
- In each project copy, go to the Sources window and uncheck the Active box for the unused sources. This can also be done via the Source List view.

Source List Showing 1 Active Source
- Run CALPUFF for each project. The results from these individual projects represent the contribution of each source or source group.
- Create a new project to store the combined results. The easiest way to do this is to create another project copy. Make sure it includes all sources. If you do not have a single run which contains all sources, you can use the Export | Sources command from the individual projects and Import the resulting spreadsheets to your cumulative project.
- Select Tools | CALSUM Wizard. Follow the Wizard steps to verify the species of interest, add the model output files (CONC.DAT, DFLX.DAT, or WFLX.DAT) from the individual projects, and scale output as necessary.
- Press the Run button to execute CALSUM.
The output from CALSUM can be processed through CALPOST to get the cumulative air quality impacts from the various sources. Source contribution information is derived from the individual source modeling projects.
Another benefit to following this setup is that the individual model run times can take much less time than a project containing all sources in a single run.
Note that CALSUM can only be used if:
- The output files are of the same type (containing either concentrations, wet deposition fluxes, or dry deposition fluxes)
- The time periods contained in the files are identical
- The species are the same and in the same order
- The receptors (e.g., sampling, discrete, etc.) are the same in terms of number, location, and order

Impending Blight: How Statoil's Plans Threaten the Great Australian Bight
May 6, 2018 - The cold and violent waters of the Great Australian Bight are home to one of the country’s most biodiverse and important marine ecosystems, the heart of its fishing industry, a growing tourism hotspot – and potentially its newest oil field.
Of the species in the bight, 85% are found nowhere else on the planet. It is a breeding ground for the endangered southern right whale and a feeding zone for Australian sea lions, great white sharks, migratory sperm whales and short-tailed shearwaters.
It’s also an untapped resource, the economic benefits of which could be “enormous”, say oil and gas groups. Environmentalists, scientists and members of the communities that ring the bight worry the damage too could be enormous.
Canada Loses Bid to Overturn NAFTA Ruling on Rebuffed N.S. Quarry
May 2, 2018 - The Federal Court of Canada has dismissed Canada's application to overturn a potentially expensive NAFTA ruling that it wrongly denied a U.S. company permission to open a quarry in Digby Neck, N.S.
In a decision released Wednesday, Justice Anne Mactavish ruled an international arbitration panel "did not exceed its jurisdiction" when it found Canada at fault and liable for damages under investor protections contained in the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Canada had asked the court to set aside an award from the tribunal convened by the Permanent Court of Arbitration — an intergovernmental organization — that it is liable for damages to Delaware-based concrete company Bilcon.
Trudeau Government Says Canada Will Avoid Billions of Dollars in Losses From New Crackdown on Oilpatch Pollution
April 26, 2018 - Canada’s fossil fuel industry will soon have to make sure a potent form of its carbon pollution doesn't escape from its operations, in order to protect the environment, clean the air and save over $10 billion in avoided climate change costs, according to new federal rules.
The Trudeau government published long-awaited regulations requiring fossil fuel companies to reduce the harmful effects of methane, one of the world’s major greenhouse gases, on April 26. The regulations are contained in the Canada Gazette, the government’s official publication.
The regulations are necessary “for the purpose of protecting the environment on which life depends,” it states. Canada promised in 2016 alongside the United States and Mexico that it would cut methane emissions from the oil and gas sector 40 to 45 per cent below 2012 levels by 2025.
Emissions Fight Pits California Against Detroit
April 26, 2018 - Don Arax, a high school football coach in Fresno, Calif., sometimes cancels practices because his players can't breathe.
"We're worried," said the coach at Bullard High School. "About 25% of our kids are carrying inhalers now. I find empty inhalers all the time in the weight room and on the fields. We practice from 7 to 9 p.m. during the bad months. And my son's elementary school keeps (students) inside because of air quality."
At 53, the Fresno native says exhaust from passenger cars and trucks moving farm products through California's Central Valley has changed everyday life. "I used to always see the mountains. Now it's a rare day when we see the mountains" — the Sierra Nevada about 50 miles to the east.
