MODELING TIP

AERMOD’s New RLINE Source Type

The U.S. EPA released the latest update to the AERMOD modeling system – dated 19191 – on August 21, 2019. One of the major formulation updates in this release is the addition of the RLINE source type.

AERMOD’s RLINE source algorithm is used to model near-surface releases from mobile sources and can be used to represent a travelled roadway with either single or multiple lanes of traffic. It originated as the R-LINE model, a joint effort between the U.S. EPA, University of North Carolina, and University of California Riverside, and it represents the first true line source algorithm ever implemented into AERMOD.

Input parameters for the RLINE source type include:

  • Emission rate (given in grams/second/area [g/s/m2])
  • Average release height
  • Road width
  • Optional initial plume vertical dimension

The RLINE source has been included in AERMOD View with the Version 9.8 release. To add an RLINE source to your project, select the RLINE Source button Modeling Tip picture from the drawing toolbar and left-click in the main display to place the road vertices. Right-click to end the line, and the RLINE Source Inputs dialog will appear.
