Introducing The New Home of the CALPUFF Model! |
Lakes Environmental Software is thrilled to announce the launch of CALPUFF.org, the new official home for the CALPUFF modeling system following its acquisition from Exponent. CALPUFF, a widely used atmospheric dispersion modeling system, will continue to be a reliable and accessible resource for researchers, environmental consultants, and regulatory agencies worldwide. Lakes Environmental is dedicated to maintaining the integrity and availability of CALPUFF, ensuring its continuous support and development.
To enhance the user experience, Lakes Environmental recommends CALPUFF View, a user-friendly interface designed to simplify the setup and visualization of CALPUFF and its many pre- and post-processing models. CALPUFF View makes managing complex simulations quicker and easier, helping users perform sophisticated atmospheric dispersion analyses with fewer hassles. MODELING TIP |
CALPUFF & CALPUFF View: What’s the Difference? |
Lakes Software recently announced its acquisition of the CALPUFF modeling system from Exponent. Because Lakes’ CALPUFF View interface is well known throughout the modeling community, some modelers were not aware of the differences between this application and the stand-alone modeling system. This tip will explain the relationship between the modeling system and the CALPUFF View interface.
The CALPUFF Modeling System
CALPUFF is an advanced non-steady-state meteorological and air quality modeling system consisting of three primary components:
- CALMET – a diagnostic three-dimensional meteorological model
- CALPUFF – an air quality dispersion model
- CALPOST – a post-processing package
In addition to these components, there are numerous processors that can be used to develop model inputs (e.g., geophysical & meteorological data pre-processing) or post-process and analyze modeling results .
The entire CALPUFF system is distributed for free, and all components / processors can be executed via the command line. Components are archived as zip files containing the executable, model code, and configuration files. Most also contain sample input files.
Use of the system applies to a wide variety of scenarios including:
- Long-range transport of pollutants (beyond 50km of source emissions)
- Near-field impacts in regions with complex dispersion situations including:
- Complex terrain
- Stagnation, inversion, recirculation, and fumigation conditions
- Overwater transport and coastal conditions
- Light or calm wind conditions
- Visibility assessments and Federal Class I area impact studies
- Secondary pollutant formation
- And more!
Visit CALPUFF.org today, the new home of the CALPUFF model!
Lakes’ CALPUFF View Interface
CALPUFF View provides a complete graphical solution for the CALPUFF modeling system. With its powerful and independent QA tools, the application provides important graphical and visual context to the model input and output data. The application includes support for all primary system components and numerous processors.
Some key features in CALPUFF View’s design include:
Using CALPUFF View streamlines all aspects of model setup, execution, and analysis. Additional features can be found on the CALPUFF View website as well as archived Modeling Tips to help users get the most out of their experience.

Arctic Melting Heavily Influenced by Little-Studied Meteorological Phenomena, Find Scientists Led by UMass Amherst |
June 5, 2024 - A team of scientists led by François Lapointe, a research associate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has combined paleoclimatic data from the last 2,000 years with powerful computer modeling and in-the-field research on lake sediments and tree rings to show that an understudied phenomenon, known as atmospheric blocking, has long influenced temperature swings in the Arctic.

Wildfire Smoke Reached 99% of U.S. Lakes in 2019-2021 |
June 7, 2024 - Where there’s smoke, there’s not necessarily fire.
Wildfire smoke, sometimes drifting from hundreds of miles away, touched nearly every lake in North America for at least one day per year from 2019 to 2021, according to a study from the University of California, Davis.
