WRF AERMET-Ready Data

Lakes Environmental employs the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to compute accurate windfields anywhere in the world. We use the Mesoscale Model Interface Program (MMIF) to convert WRF output into AERMET meteorological data input format.


The met files delivered to you are described below:

  • Surface Met Data File: ONSITE format (*.dat)
  • Upper Air Met Data File: FSL format (*.fsl)
  • AERMET Input Files for Stages 1, 2, 3 (*.IN)
  • Years: 2008-current

WRF CALMET-Ready Data

Lakes Environmental provides meteorological data, for any location in the world running the Weather Research and Forecasting mesoscale model (WRF).


We generate 3D.DAT format CALMET-ready from WRF output employing CALWRF. The 3D.DAT file consists of three-dimensional data spanning many vertical layers and covering a horizontal grid and domain specified by the client.


The following are the typical data parameters available:

  • Grid Resolutions:
    • 1km and 4km (recommended for complex terrain sites and coastal areas)
    • 12km (recommended for flat terrain sites)
  • Domain Sizes: 50 x 50 km, 100 x 100 km
  • Format: 3D.DAT
  • Years: 2008-current

Lakes Environmental provides modeled meteorological data for any location in the world running the Weather Research and Forecasting mesoscale model (WRF).


CALPUFF-ready WRF data is generated using the USEPA Mesoscale Model Interface Program (MMIF) and produces data files for direct input to the CALPUFF air dispersion model. Files can be generated for the EPA-Approved modeling system (Version 5) or newer systems (Version 6 & Version 7)


The following are the typical data parameters available:

  • Grid Resolutions:
    • 1km and 4km (recommended for complex terrain sites and coastal areas)
    • 12km (recommended for flat terrain sites)
  • Domain Sizes: 50 x 50 km, 100 x 100 km
  • Format: CALMET.DAT with accompanying gridded terrain data
  • Years: 2008-current

MM5 AERMET-Ready Data

Lakes Environmental offers a service providing modeled meteorological data for any location in the world.  We obtain this data by running the NCAR MM5 (5th-generation Mesoscale Model) prognostic meteorological model for a specified location and site domain.


Once the MM5 preprocessing has been completed, the MM5 output file is converted into a format recognized by the AERMET model (meteorological preprocessor for the AERMOD model). The final output is generated by creating a pseudo met-station at the specified site location. 


The met files delivered to you are described below:

  • Surface Met Data in SAMSON format
  • Upper Air Met Data in TD-6201 format
  • Years : 2001-current

Need Data for the CAL3QHCR and ISCST3 Models?


Our AERMET-ready MM5 data is also suitable for use in the PCRAMMET meteorological preprocessor used to prepare met data for the ISCST3 model.


Please include an additional comment requesting your quote referencing the CAL3QHCR and ISCST3 models.



MM5 CALMET-Ready Data

CALMET-ready MM5 data is generated in the 3D.DAT format which is the format supported by the CALMET model. Station AERMOD-Ready Data (USA only)

Lakes Environmental offers AERMOD-ready meteorological station data in the United States. Our team of experts will prepare your order using preferred station met data formats such as:

  • Surface Station Data: TD-3505 hourly surface data from the U.S. National Climatic Data Center (NCDC)
  • 1-Minute Station Data: TD-6405 1-minute ASOS wind data (where applicable)
  • 5-Minute Station Data: TD-6401 5-minute ASOS wind data (where applicable)
  • Upper Air Station Data: NOAA FSL radiosonde data
  • Land Use Data: NLCD 1992 GeoTIFF
  • Years: 1980-current

Your order will include full AERMET processing as well as AERSURFACE and AERMINUTE (where applicable).  The following AERMOD-ready met files will be delivered to you:

  • Surface met data file (*.SFC)
  • Profile met data file (*.PFL)

Note: The above SFC and PFL files should be used directly with the AERMOD model.
